Martin Luther King’s Impact On Real Estate

Fill in the blank…

“I have a _________…”

Was it “dream”?

Good chance it was. We all know this line from Martin Luther King, Jr.’s famous speech. So when we hear those first three words, it naturally comes to mind.

What many people don’t know how much he impacted real estate and the dream of home ownership.

It was his death that gave Congress the final push needed to pass the Fair Housing Act in 1968. This was put in place to ban racial discrimination in housing. You can’t be refused the rental or purchase of a house, based upon your race.

Seems simple enough to most people now. A given. But it didn’t happen overnight. And believe it or not, it can and does still come up.

Today, I’m reflecting on his legacy and his ideas of equality and respect. I’m thinking about how I can make life better for others. As Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “The time is always right to do what is right.”
