Awendaw

Awendaw is a hidden gem of natural coastal and marine forest beauty. If you’re looking for a peaceful retreat that feels remote yet is close to highly-rated medical care, airports, and shopping, Awendaw is the perfect area to call home.

Learn about Awendaw

Nestled between the eastern edge of Francis Marion National Forest and the western edge of Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, Awendaw is an outdoor lover's paradise offering access to the Wando River, tidal creeks, and the Intracoastal Waterway. You'll find equestrian, water view, and dock homes – some in planned communities.

Named by Sewee Native Americans, Awendaw is home to their shell mound, an approximately 4,000-year-old archeological site and part of the northernmost shell ring in a series stretching down to Florida and around the gulf coast to Mississippi. Fleeing the Salem witch trials in Massachusetts, European settlers first arrived in 1696. During the Civil War, Awendaw played a role in the Union blockade of Charleston Harbor. The town was established in 1992. You can learn more at the Awendaw Museum.
