Awendaw

Nestled between the eastern edge of Francis Marion National Forest and the western edge of Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, Awendaw is an outdoor lover's paradise offering access to the Wando River, tidal creeks, and the Intracoastal Waterway. You'll find equestrian, water view, and dock homes – some in planned communities.

Named by Sewee Native Americans, Awendaw is home to their shell mound, an approximately 4,000-year-old archeological site and part of the northernmost shell ring in a series stretching down to Florida and around the gulf coast to Mississippi. Fleeing the Salem witch trials in Massachusetts, European settlers first arrived in 1696. During the Civil War, Awendaw played a role in the Union blockade of Charleston Harbor. HIGHLIGHTS

With over 250,000 acres of land, the Francis Marion National Forest offers plenty of opportunities for hiking, biking, and camping. There are also several lakes and rivers where you can go fishing. Explore the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, a protected area that spans over 64,000 acres of land and water. It's home to various wildlife, including endangered sea turtles and bald eagles. Enjoy kayaking, birdwatching, and nature tours.

Bulls Bay is a large estuary famous for fishing and boating. We recommend taking one of Coastal Expeditions' ferry tours to Bulls Bay Island to explore the preserved natural beauty.

The Center for Birds of Prey is dedicated to conserving and protecting birds of prey and serves as a refuge and rehabilitation center. Visitors get an up-close educational experience with hawks, owls, eagles, falcons, and more. Be sure to catch a flight demonstration.

EVENTS

The Awendaw Green Barn Jam features live music on Wednesday nights at Sewee Outpost. True to its name, a converted rustic barn provides the stage for an outdoor seating area and food trucks. The talented regional musicians and bands cover a range of folk, bluegrass, and rock.

The Kris Kringle Market, held at the historic Oaks Plantation, celebrates German Christmas traditions. It features various handmade crafts, gifts, and German food and beverages. The plantation provides Wando River views and is decorated with thousands of twinkling lights, garlands, wreaths, decorated trees, and an outdoor train display. Enjoy live music and the warmth of fire pits at night.

The annual Blue Crab Festival is held in August at the Awendaw Municipal Center and Lake.
